Family visit to the castle

Visiting with children

Little visitor at large

Take one of our Daily Dungeon tours to discover the secrets of the castle.

Come and play!

Pontefract Castle is ideal for families with children. With free entry and lots of drop in activities, it also offers a great value day out.

The inner bailey (lawn area) is a large car free space to run and play, enclosed at all sides by the castle ruins. The circuit path around the inner bailey is perfect for short buggy walks with benches along the way to rest toddler legs and the café serves a great cup of tea with homemade cakes and biscuits.

Are the kids babysitting grandparents? During school holidays there are a number of fun, free drop-in activities and lawn games available including our popular Explorer Backpacks

Other information to help plan your visit:

  • Pontefract Castle welcomes breast & bottle feeding parents
  • The café offers a children’s menu, bottle warming facilities and highchairs
  • Baby changing facilities are available on site
  • Lost children point is inside the visitor centre (check this)
  • Picnics are always welcome but please leave your BBQ’s at home.
  • For information on keeping everyone safe during your visit, see here

Older children may like to try this quick quiz about the castle before they visit.

Thank you & enjoy your visit.
