The Activity Zone at Pontefract Castle

Welcome to the Activity Zone!

Part of our Visitor Centre, this intriguing space used to be a 19th century blacksmith's barn.

These days, we've swapped the hammer and anvil for crafts and games, with loads of different things to make and do for kids and grownups alike.

Keep little minds entertained with our selection of free activity sheets: colour in some beautiful but simple illustrations, and have a go at easy to use paper models. The activity sheets are regularly rotated, so you can try your hand at a different model each time you visit!

The Activity Zone is also the site of our regular craft and activity sessions, including our monthly Castle Crafts for under 5s, plus a massive range of themed activities during the school holidays. During special events, you can usually find something exciting taking place here, from medieval baking at Christmas to making a dragon mask for St George's Day.

And our craft sessions aren't just for children. Our fascinating series of adult workshops and talks take place here in the Activity Zone. Why not browse our What's On listing and see if something takes your fancy?

We have medieval games, here, too - why not try your hand at nine men's morris (it's trickier than it looks!)?

There is also a series of banners hanging from the lofty ceiling, each one telling the story of a different castle resident from years past - find out which Civil War colonel sneaked Royalist soliders into the castle, and which Georgian chemist invented the famous Pontefract Cakes!

So when you come to see us, pop into the Activity Zone to discover what’s happening on the day of your visit!

(N.B. some activities must be booked in advance).
