Pontefract Giants

“And there was dancing of Giantes; and musick prepared to meet us.”

Those were the words written by playwright Ben Jonson more than 400 years ago.

This September, at the turn of the year, when the veil between the worlds begins to grow thin, Wakefield Council and artists James Bulley and Mathew Rosier present: Pontefract Giants, a connection across 300,000 years of history in Pontefract Castle's ancient grounds.

Pontefract Giants is a sound and light show featuring modern-day Pontefract residents who will transform, with the aid of the castle’s trees, into the “Giants” - the ancestors of Pontefract - each one representing a period of the town’s history, from the misty, forgotten depths of Pontefract’s very first human habitation, through Iron Age farming, to post-Civil War liquorice cultivation and more.

Be guided by the poetic narration as the Giants come to life before your eyes, accompanied by the natural forces that shaped the human lives in Pontefract’s story - fire, rock and rain - and a moving, atmospheric soundtrack.

Each performance of Pontefract Giants will last approximately half an hour, with live music from Manasamitra featuring harp and koto between showings.

Performances take place at 8:00pm, and 8:45pm, with the last performance at 9:30pm.

Experience Pontefract Castle as never before! Explore the floodlit castle, listen to live music, toast marshmallows on our roaring fire bowls, or sit and share the atmospheric location with friends and family.
