Pontefract Castle

Welcome to Pontefract Castle.

Once hailed as the Key to the North, this historically important fortress has seen many changes over the centuries and has some captivating stories to tell. From battles and sieges, starvation and destruction to royal infidelity and the cultivation of liquorice, you'll be surprised at what these walls have seen!

Tread in the footsteps of Kings and Queens and explore the historic ruins of the castle. Come and play in our wide open space, experience the darkness of the dungeon and don’t forget to pop into our new visitor centre, gift shop and café.

This year will see the end of a major conservation project to preserve the castle for the future. We have made some fascinating discoveries along the way and look forward to sharing them with you. Work at the castle is still ongoing and some areas within the grounds are closed, please visit our Key to the North project page to find out more. We are still open and team are happy to help visitors explore the site and recommend calling in advance so we can let you know what's happening.

Entrance to the castle is FREE and we’re open throughout the year. We have an exciting range of events, activities and workshops coming up over the next few months to entertain you and your family. We look forward to welcoming you soon.

Please note that due to conservation works taking place some areas of the castle grounds are currently closed. For further information please contact the castle team.
