Details

Hans Talhoffer was a fencing master active in the Holy Roman Empire during the mid-fifteenth century. Across the course of his career he produced a series of Fechtbücher, or fight books, which depict the art of single combat. A specific fight book, produced in 1459, is particularly interesting, as it includes not only material on fighting, but also a wide variety of suggestions of how to besiege a castle, ranging from giant trebuchets to impressive tanks and bizarre diving suits.

Jacob Henry Deacon is a PhD student at the Institute for Medieval Studies at the University of Leeds, working on how individuals prepared for combat in England during the Middle Ages, and how society viewed both the training and the teachers.
